Research focuses on welfare states in Ireland and internationally and in particular on social security, housing, education, immigration, crime, health, family policy, private welfare, sustainable social policy and the environment, and disadvantaged neighbourhoods and groups, such as households in poverty.

Research focuses broadly on social work policy and practice, in particular on: health and mental health; child protection and well-being; drugs and addiction, anti-discriminatory practice; education and learning.

The School offers interdisciplinary research on themes such as economic in/equality, care, sexuality, gender identities, human rights, social movements and social change strategies is conducted through the UCD Equality Studies Centre and the UCD Centre for Gender, Feminisms and Sexualities
