Mission

UCD Humanities showcases the university's expertise and scholarship in the humanities and stimulates new interdisciplinary areas of research of international distinction.

The institute promotes the international visibility and distinctiveness of interdisciplinary research in the humanities at UCD by acting as a laboratory for the study of culture and the human experience. It complements research undertaken within related UCD Schools and research institutes while concurrently providing a neutral space for the delivery of interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary research of key societal challenges. The institute acts as a driving force for knowledge creation and transfer within UCD and in the context of the humanities in Ireland and Europe.

It forms a key component within UCD’s strategic mission to develop as a leading global research intensive university. It constitutes a vibrant and creative space for interdisciplinary research in the arts and humanities. Within UCD, the institute acts as a creative hub for interdisciplinary enquiry and discussion in the humanities and between the humanities and other areas of social and scientific research. It provides both a physical and intellectual space for research projects, groups and centres and serves as a dynamic and innovative environment for graduate students affiliated to member programmes and centres.‌‌

History

UCD Humanities Institute was established in 2001 under the HEA Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI), and moved into its purpose-built office in 2003 which provides space for forty full-time researchers and a dedicated seminar room which seats over fifty people.

Since its establishment, the institute has been a working home for hundreds of postgraduate, postdoctoral and visiting scholars, and has hosted hundreds of conferences, seminars, meetings and receptions devoted to the advanced study of the humanities and collaborating disciplines. It has also hosted gradaute research education programmes and early career training programmes for humanities researchers, and has already shaped the next generation of humanities scholars in Ireland and further afield. Our research and engagement activities have involved collaboration with researchers from every College in UCD, and with researchers from all around the world.

UCD Humanities Institute is affiliated to the Irish Humanities Alliance (IHA), Universitas 21, the Consortium for Humanities Centers and Institutes (CHCI), and the Consortium of Institutes of Advanced Study (CIAS).
