UCD and Sutherland School of Law united in support for Xuedan Xiong

The School learned with great concern of the incident involving our PhD student Xuedan (Shelly) Xiong last Friday (August 14th).  See (opens in a new window)https://www.rte.ie/news/dublin/2020/0816/1159441-ashtown-royal-canal/.  Representatives of the School, including Professor Imelda Maher, Dean of Law, have been in contact to offer their support. UCD Sutherland School of Law would like to reiterate that we, through our research and teaching, continue to provide an environment for our diverse student body where everyone belongs and shares in its academic mission.  Specifically relating to the topic of racism, 'The EU Framework Decision on Combating Certain Forms of Expressions of Racism and Xenophobia' is a topic that has been covered by Dr Mark Coen, of UCD Sutherland School of Law in a module focussing on 'Personal Rights'. The policy can be accessed here:
Further information documenting Irish law and practice in relation to hate crimes can be accessed in a report produced in 2017 by Dr Jennifer Schweppe and Dr Amanda Haynes of the Hate and Hostility Research Group at the University of Limerick:  (opens in a new window)https://www.rte.ie/news/crime/2018/0704/976199-hate_crime/.
