Materials Science & Engineering

Tuesday, 13 February, 2024

Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary field that seeks to understand and engineer the relationship between the structure of materials at atomic or molecular scales and their macroscopic or bulk properties. Our ME (dual accreditation - Engineers Ireland and IOM3) and MEngSc programmes in Materials Science and Engineering Programme complement manufacturing-based engineering by training graduates for R&D and engineering roles in industry sectors as diverse as biomedical, energy, electronic, automotive and aerospace. Our programmes provide advanced engineering education in subject areas related to design and application of materials such as metals, ceramics, polymers, composites and semi-conductors. The core knowledge in this field is essential in currently evolving advanced technologies such as additive manufacturing (also known as 3D-Printing) and nanotechnology, as well as being an essential part of the current every day uses of materials in engineering applications. SMME academics and researchers have well-developed links with industry and have a range of research programmes funded by Science Foundation Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, the European Research Council, the Irish Research Council and many others.
