Xinhui outside Tsinghua University

The Sir Bernard Crossland Symposium is a renowned annual mechanical manufacturing event in Ireland, established in 1997 under the joint auspices of Engineers Ireland and the Council of Professors of Mechanical Engineering in Irish Universities, and the symposium brings together academics, industrialists and PhD students. This event pays homage to Sir Bernard Crossland's profound commitment to advancing education and research in Mechanical Engineering, specifically focusing on the pivotal role of design and manufacturing in engineering practice. This year, the 26th Annual Symposium was hosted in the Bernal Institute of the University of Limerick on the 14th and 15th of September, 2023.

In the 26th Sir Bernard Crossland Symposium, Xinhui Wang, a second-year PhD student from the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at University College Dublin (UCD), emerged as a standout participant at this year's symposium. His PhD project, generously funded by the "European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under Marie Skłodowska- Curie," centres on the ambitious goal of advancing High-Precision and Large-Scale 3D Printing of Polymers via Digital Light Processing (DLP). Xinhui's dedication and pioneering work exemplify the forward-thinking research undertaken at UCD.

In the symposium, Xinhui showcased his two-year research alongside PhD students from other Irish universities, including Trinity College Dublin, University of Limerick, University of Galway, Munster Technological University, and Queen's University Belfast. His presentation captured the essence of cutting-edge scientific and technical content and demonstrated an innovative approach with profound industrial relevance. Finally, he won the First prize for the best paper and presentation, which was awarded € 1200. This is also the best result for UCD in the past eight years.

Congratulations to Xinhui Wang and his supervisors, Dr Nan Zhang and Prof. Michael Gilchrist !
