What it Takes to Succeed in Your Next Interview

Preparing for interviews can feel daunting, no matter where you are in your career journey. Whether it is your first role as a graduate, a career change, or a step up into leadership, interviews remain one of the key moments where preparation and mindset can make all the difference.

So, how can you put your best foot forward and stand out in today's competitive job market? Here are some practical ways to boost your confidence and performance, with expertise from UCD Careers Network.

Know what employers are looking for

Strong interview skills go beyond rehearsing answers. Understanding what employers value can help you tailor your responses. Today's interviewers are looking for candidates who show curiosity, adaptability and clear communication. They also want to see genuine interest in the role and an ability to connect your skills and experience to their organisation's needs. Doing your research and thinking about how your strengths align with the company’s goals can help you stand out.

Structure your answers with clarity

One common challenge in interviews is understanding how to present your experience. Using simple frameworks such as STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) can help structure your answers and keep you on track. This approach allows you to provide examples that demonstrate your skills and achievements in a way that interviewers can easily follow. Practising answers aloud can also help build fluency and confidence, so you can deliver your key messages naturally.

Show genuine interest

Employers want to hire candidates who are enthusiastic about the opportunity. Preparing thoughtful questions, referencing specific projects or initiatives from the organisation, and showing awareness of the organisation's values all help to demonstrate genuine interest. Remember that interviews are also a chance for you to assess whether the organisation is a good fit for you. Engaging with curiosity helps create a two-way conversation.

Manage nerves and build confidence

Feeling nervous is perfectly normal; the key is to manage those nerves so that they do not inhibit your performance. Small steps such as practising with a friend, preparing key messages, and arriving early can help you feel more in control. It is also helpful to remember that interviews are not about perfection. They are about connection. Staying calm and authentic will leave a stronger impression than trying to memorise every detail.

Keep learning from each interview

Every interview is a learning opportunity. Reflecting on what went well, what you could improve, and how you felt during the process can help you grow in confidence for future interviews. Building interview skills takes time, but with preparation, curiosity and a growth mindset, you can approach each opportunity with greater ease. With practice and preparation, you can show employers the best of what you have to offer.
