Project Objectives

  1. To quantify carbon pools and fluxes in blue carbon habitats in Ireland

  2. To determine factors that control carbon preservation in these habitats, examining threats such as overgrazing and nitrogen pollution

  3. To identify climate adaptation measures specifically, assessing storm surge attenuation ability, identifying areas for managed realignment of coastal wetlands, and assessing benefits of invasive cordgrass (Spartina sp) for carbon storage

  4. To generate a management framework for the correct management of coastal wetlands based on findings from the study, and disseminate findings to stakeholders
