IT Support Policy

1. Purpose:

This policy outlines the information technology support available exclusively to members through the Geary Institute.  It explains what types of supports are provided and how their provision is managed. 

2. Background Information:

The Geary Institute offers members IT support for funded research projects. The objective is to provide IT support for the design and implementation of research projects and the dissemination of research findings.   

It does not include support for the core IT services that are provided by UCD centrally such as:

  • Email
  • Brightspace
  • Google Apps
  • InfoHub
  • eProcurement

Support for these services is provided by UCD IT support. A full list of the services provided by UCD IT services may be found at:

3. Accessing Support:

It is important to note that the IT support provided by the Geary Institute is shared with another Institution resulting in support not being available on a full-time basis.

4. Support Provided: 

4.1  Research Project Design:

Gathering IT requirements and designing IT systems and infrastructure. Depending on the scope of the requirements, implementation support may be provided.

4.2 Software and Hardware Procurement:

Support is provided for evaluating and selecting appropriate software packages, recommending hardware specifications and general IT support and troubleshooting.

4.3  Web Space:

Support may be provided for the design, development and maintenance of project web sites 

4.4  Workstation Setup

Support is provided for the connection of desktops, laptops to the UCD wired/wireless network.  Support is also provided for setting up and accessing the Geary Institute printers where appropriate. More information regarding wired/wireless setup below may be found here:

4.5 Data Acquisition

Where feasible, support may be provided to facilitate data acquisition involving technologies such as third party APIs, web scraping etc.

4.6 IT Infrastructure Implementation

IT support may be provided for the implementation of infrastructure either locally or cloud based. Support can include infrastructure setup and/or ongoing administration.

4.7 Software Development & Systems Integration

Support may be provided for the development of bespoke systems to aid in the delivery of a research project. This may include application development and/or bespoke integration of third party systems. Support for these projects will only be provided on a case by case basis and where resources are available.
