The All-Ireland Interprofessional Healthcare Challenge for Students (AIPEC) is a national competition for healthcare students in Ireland, designed to promote multidisciplinary collaboration and teamwork to achieve patient-centred clinical excellence.  This year, the event was hosted by the University of Galway. Multidisciplinary student teams from University of Galway, University of Limerick, University College Cork, University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, University of Ulster and Queen’s University took part.

Participating teams were given six weeks to research and design a care plan for a patient with complex needs. Each team had 8 minutes to present their case, followed by questions from the judging panel.

The standard of presentations was excellent from all University teams.

The winning UCD team was made up of students who collaborated across the health sciences disciplines in UCD:

  • Aditi Chaturvedi (Medicine)
  • Ava Giblin (Radiography)
  • Clodagh McIntyre (Physiotherapy)
  • Meghan Jennings (Nursing)
  • Naomi McDonnell (Dietetics)
  • Noel Portley (Social work)
  • Sai Manoj Reddy Narava (Medicine)

The team was supported by UCD Health Affairs, and the academic mentors were Dr Cliona O’Sullivan, School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science and Dr Brynne Gilmore, School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems.

Many thanks to Dr Orla Mongan, University of Galway and the organising committee for a great event and to Ms. Karen Golden, CEO of Galway Simon Community, who gave a thought-provoking keynote address on homelessness and inclusive health care.
