Weed Control

Weed control for the first five years of a transplanted tree is a necessity. An area of at least one metre in diameter should be kept free from weeds around the base of the tree. This can vary depending on the size of the transplanted tree. Obviously a larger area will be needed if a large mature tree has been transplanted. Weeds interfere physically with the growth of the tree as they are competing for moisture in the area where the tree roots are competing also. Maintenance techniques should concentrate on eliminating any competition from turfgrass, weeds or anything that is competing with the tree roots for water. Mulch can be used to provide a protective layer around the base of the tree, therefore not allowing any competition from weeds. However, too much mulch can be a hindrance in conserving moisture as it can inhibit the water from reaching the roots.
