Anaesthesia
If your pet is undergoing diagnostic procedures or surgery at UCD Veterinary Hospital, then analgesia, sedation or general anaesthesia may be required. A dedicated team of anaesthetists at UCD Veterinary Hospital provide anaesthesia for over 2,000 dogs, cats, horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and exotics pets each year. Our team includes three European specialists in veterinary anaesthesia, one anaesthesia registrar, two anaesthesia residents, one anaesthesia intern and three small animal anaesthesia nurses.
Blood Donor Clinic
While blood products are readily available in human medicine, they are slightly more scarce in animals. Animals with life-threatening anaemias due to massive bleeding from trauma (such as in a road traffic accident), surgery or bleeding disorders, or for animals with immune-mediated haemolytic anaemias (where the red blood cells are been destroyed by the body), blood transfusions are essential to improve oxygen carrying capacity and save an animals’ life. And, just like people, dogs and cats have different blood types. Giving a matched blood transfusion minimises the risk of an adverse reaction.
Almost 5,000 Small Animal and 1,000 Large Animal cases go through the UCDVH Diagnostic Imaging (DI) unit each year. The unit provides a full range of Diagnostic Imaging services for all internal patients admitted to the Hospital, but also a variety of services for external cases referred to the UCDVH by veterinary practitioners or booked in directly by clients. All of our equipment is state of the art, veterinary dedicated and operated by our expert team.
Diagnostic Laboratories
The staff in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory provide a friendly, expert and rapid-turnaround service for all diagnostic tests in their discipline. Our Veterinary Clinical Pathologist is board-certified by the ACVP, ECVCP, and RCPath; the lab is approved for training Residents in Clinical Pathology, four of whom have been boarded. Staff analyse ~15,000 samples annually for comprehensive, clinical chemistry and haematologic profiles, and report the results out by email on the same day as sample receipt. Any special tests not available in-house are referred to a professional, external lab. Assistance is provided with interpretation of test results, where needed.
