Material Tales: African Storyteller-Authors in the Literary Marketplace

Clare’s research investigates how writers who produce work for the global literary marketplace but who bring with them practices and tenets of oral tradition and culture unsettle the often invisible ideological foundations of contemporary modes of literary creation, publication, and dissemination. She examines how this literary defamiliarisation functions through the processes of adaptation and resistance that these storyteller-authors employ in their creative reconstruction of oral cultural expression into literary products. She is particularly interested in the work of D.O Fágúnwà, Amos Tutuola, Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi and Akwaeke Emezi, as well as digital literary platforms and organisations such as Ibua Publishing (Uganda) and Audiobook Masters (South Africa).
