The closing ceremony of Maths Sparks 2017 was held in the College of Science on Monday April 3rd, attended by parents, teachers, pupils, UCD students, and staff from the UCD School of Mathematics & Statistics.
Over seventy post-primary students from eleven participating schools received a certificate from Head of School Prof. Gary McGuire for their successful participation in the Maths Sparks Problem Solving Workshops 2017 programme. An additional prize was awarded to Vincent Pandec from Cabinteely Community College, who solved a mathematical problem set by Dr Robert Osburn during the workshop series.
Our 13 undergraduate volunteers were also recognized at the ceremony and their contribution will be acknowledged as a Diploma Supplement on their UCD transcript. These students will also receive a Digital Badge from UCD, which can be added to their on-line profile on LinkedIn etc.
Over the 4 weeks of the programme, students from the School of Mathematics & Statistics designed and presented mathematics workshops to develop skills in problem solving and mathematical thinking. Workshops were designed in a wide range of topics from Topology to Boolean Logic, with content external to the post-primary mathematics curriculum. Lecturers from the School of Mathematics & Statistics assisted undergraduate teams in designing their workshops and also presented to post-primary students on the opportunities for further study and research in mathematics.
The Maths Sparks programme, run by Dr Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin and Dr Anthony Cronin, is now in its third year. It is supported by UCD Access & Lifelong Learning and is funded by SFI Discover.
