Celebrating Indian Independence Day at UCD

On 15th August, the UCD School of Civil Engineering hosted a vibrant celebration of Indian Independence Day, organised by Dr. Saptarshi Sen with support from the School Engagement Committee. The event highlighted UCD’s commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) by bringing staff and students together through cultural engagement.
The celebration opened with a warm welcome from Dr. Ekin Ozer, CDIC Programme Director and member of the School Engagement Committee. The event was further honoured by the presence of Dr. Aoife Ahern, Vice President for EDI and College Principal of the College of Engineering and Architecture, who presided as the esteemed guest.
The Guest of Honour, Mr. Kenneth Thompson, former Irish Ambassador to India, shared his experiences of strengthening ties between Ireland and India during his diplomatic posting in New Delhi. Both dignitaries addressed the gathering, reflecting on the importance of intercultural dialogue in fostering inclusivity and mutual respect.
The programme was enriched with audio-visual presentations on Indian culture and heritage, a colourful Rangoli design contest, and soulful performances of Indian music by staff and students. Guests were also treated to a selection of traditional Indian savoury snacks and sweets, adding a festive flavour to the occasion.
