Prospective Students - Pre-Service MA in TESOL

The MA in TESOL Pre-Service

Our MA in TESOL Pre-Service programme is aimed at graduates who aspire to become English language teachers but have no professional experience of teaching English. It is designed to provide students with practical knowledge and skills they can immediately apply to teaching practice.

Graduates of the programme can apply for different positions within TESOL such as teachers, material designers, examiners, course designers and beyond.

The international field of TESOL continues to expand and there are exciting opportunities for graduates with advanced qualifications.

Why take the MA in TESOL Pre-Service at UCD?

Why take the MA in TESOL Pre-Service at UCD?

The programme emphasises the importance of research-informed practice, critical reflection, autonomous learning and the translation of theory into practice. Our TESOL team will also foster collaboration with local and international experts in the field to ensure that students can network, share best practices and contribute to the growing professionalisation of the TESOL field.

Students will explore the theoretical underpinnings of English language teaching and will link them directly to classroom practice. Each week, research will be brought to the practical setting of the classroom context as students develop their knowledge and reflect on research informed approaches.

We also offer a teaching practice module where student teachers will be observed and receive feedback on their teaching. Students will also have the opportunity to observe live language classes in the Centre.

Combining theory with practice

Combining theory with practice

Our MA in TESOL Pre-Service programme covers a broad range of subjects relevant to ELT professionals and their career development.  Students will explore the theoretical underpinnings of English language teaching and will link them directly to classroom practice. Graduates are well positioned to take up employment as specialist teachers, examiners and course designers, contributing significantly to different areas of TESOL.

Each week, research will be brought to the practical setting of the classroom context as students develop their knowledge and reflect on good practice. This goal will be achieved through the use of small groups, discussions, teaching observations, presentations, workshops and blended learning.
