UCD Graduate Studies are delighted to welcome Professor Iain Brennan from the University of Hull to UCD on October 7th to deliver a talk entitled Open Research: A PGR Production. Professor Brennan is a chartered research psychologist, Professor of Criminology and Institutional Lead for Open Research at the University of Hull and his primary focus has been on perpetrators of violent crimes, weapon carrying behaviour and criminal justice intervention. He has extensive experience with cross sectional and longitudinal panel data working and has worked on the Crime Survey for England and Wales and the Offending, Crime and Justice Survey, as well as health record and police data sets. He is an advisor on violence prevention to a range of governmental bodies and NGOs including the Home Office, Youth Endowment Fund and several police forces.

In his presentation, Open Research: A PGR Production, Iain addresses the way that doing research is becoming more transparent, driven by a set of principles and practices known as Open Research/Science. Much of this change has been driven by PGRs who see the moral and practical need for greater transparency. Journals, funders and policy makers are making changes so that, for researchers of the future, openness will not be optional. However, in some areas, change is slow and many PGRs are being disadvantaged by inertia and resistance from supervisors and senior researchers. This talk will describe the Open Research revolution and discuss ways to embed openness in PGR training.
