Excellence in Doctoral Supervision

UCD Dean of Graduate Studies Award for Excellence in Doctoral Supervision

The UCD Dean of Graduate Studies Award for Excellence in Doctoral Supervision is a biennial award, which recognises excellence in research supervisory practice by a UCD academic faculty member. Nominations for this award are made by research students in any given year and calls for nominations normally take place between November and February, with awards being made in May. Information on the nomination and application process as well as award criteria can be found below.

Nomination process

  • In stage one of the nomination process, a doctoral supervisor must be nominated by two of their research students. Both students may be currently registered on a PhD programme or one of the students may have completed their PhD under the supervisor in question. The supervisor must also have had at least one doctoral student through to completion.
  • In stage two of the process, the nominated supervisor is then invited by Graduate Studies to complete a written statement of supervisory practice. The application in its entirety will then be reviewed by a panel of experienced adjudicators.

The winner of the Award for Excellence in Doctoral Supervision receives a prize to the value of €3,000. The award is paid to the recipient's school/unit to be spent by the awardees on career development or research enhancement activity.
