3-year postdoc in NWP and statistical modelling at University College Dublin, Ireland.

We are seeking a Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 (PD1), with expertise in Numerical Weather Prediction models, renewable energy forecasting, and spatio-temporal statistical modelling.

The main responsibility of the position is to drive leading edge research into new probabilistic NWP/statistical models to forecast renewable energy supply and electricity demand. Methods will also be developed to improve forecast skill for high impact events.

This PD1 position is intended for early stage researchers, either just after completion of a PhD or for someone entering a new area for the first time. The post will be based in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, in UCD, Dublin.

This position is part of the Energy Systems Integration Partnership Programme (ESIPP: (opens in a new window)http://esipp.ie/), which is an €11m capacity building project co-funded by Science Foundation Ireland, industry and philanthropic donation. The collaborative project spans a number of disciplines, such as Electrical, Chemical and Mechanical Engineering, Geology, Mathematics, Economics, Finance, Consumer Behaviour and Technology Adoption. The ESIPP programme focus is on Energy Systems Integration (ESI) which is a multidisciplinary area ranging from science, engineering and technology to policy, economics, regulation and human behaviour. ESI is coming to the fore in the planning, design and operation of the global energy system and seeks to optimise the energy system and other large scale infrastructures, in particular water, by leveraging the synergies across all scales and pathways (i.e. electricity, fuels & heat).

ESIPP’s operations is in University College Dublin, partnering with Dublin City University (DCU), Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG), University of Limerick (UL) and Trinity College Dublin (TCD). The research work will be carried out with strong collaborative links to major energy industry players, such as AIB, EirGrid, Ervia, ESB, Glen Dimplex and seventeen other official industry collaborators. The collaborative nature of the research is envisaged to further strengthen industry research links, facilitate maximum societal research impact, and also further the career development and training of the successful candidate. Expected research findings and outputs will be published in leading international peer-reviewed power and energy conferences and journals.
