DevelopMed offers EU co-funding for 12 prestigious Precision Oncology Fellowships for researchers at the early stage of their career

SBI (Systems Biology Ireland) in UCD is coordinating a MSCA COFUND (Marie Skłodowska-Curie) programme in Precision Oncology called DevelopMed (www.ucd.ie/developmed/).

The programme, which prioritizes interdisciplinary training and career development, has the following general themes: Diagnostics, Drug Development and the Tumour Microenvironment. However, proposals from applicants can be in any basic or applied research topic broadly classified within these aforementioned themes (e.g. computational modelling, nutrition, metabolism, machine learning, immunology, bioinformatics, etc).

Participating RPOs

Fellows can be hosted at either University College Dublin (UCD; lead institution), National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG), University College Cork (UCC), or the RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences (RCSI).

Fellowships

The Fellowships are three years in duration and offer competitive salaries, a supportive working environment including high-quality training for key transferrable skills, and the ability to join the prestigious Marie Curie network. Fellowships also include a mandatory three-six month secondment to any research institution in academic, industry, clinical and/or charity settings.

Eligibility

Applicants must either possess a doctoral degree or have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience. While fellowships are open to applicants of any nationality, the EU mobility rule applies (i.e. at the time of the call deadline applicants cannot have resided in or carried out their main activity in Ireland for either >12 months in the past 3 years, or >3 years in the past 5 years). Additional details and clarifications are provided on the programme website (www.ucd.ie/developmed/).

Timeline

Applications now open with a deadline of 30th Nov 2021. Successful applicants are expected to be in post in June 2022.

Supervisor Funding Commitments

The EU funds ca. 40% of programme costs with ca. 60% being co-funded by supervisors from non-EU sources. Investigators interested in hosting a Fellow for Call 2 must ensure they have the required non-EU funding in place throughout the course of the fellowships (June 2022-2025). These PI funding commitments include the following:

  • Pay Costs: €95,766 over 3 years, which includes gross salary, pension, PRSI, mobility allowance, and family allowance (should a fellow qualify for family allowance at the call deadline).
  • Non-Pay Costs: Supervisors must ensure the following funds are available on their existing non-EU account(s) for a fellow: €15,000 p.a. over 3 years for consumables, €2,700 in travel budget, €2,160 in computing budget (or a computer to be provided), and €9,900 contribution to management & training costs.
