Dr Seán McCarthy (Class of 1960)

RIP Mon 12th July 2021

Dear colleague

It is with sadness that I write to advise you of the death of Dr Sean McCarthy (UCD School of Medicine, Class of 1960) on Monday 12th July 2021.

Sean (known locally and fondly as ‘The Doc’) was a GP who practiced in Cashel, Co. Tipperary. Sean also had a long and much valued career in regional and national politics. He was a Fianna Fail TD from 1981 to 1989, Minister of State at the Department of Industry and Commerce with special responsibility for Science and Technology from 1987 to 1989 and Senator from 1989 to 1992 on the Agricultural Panel.

Sean also previously served as Chairman of Cashel Town and South Tipperary County Councils, Chairman of South Eastern Health Board and before he passed away, was current Chairman of Tipperary Comhairle Dáil Ceantair.

As a GP, Sean’s patients remember him as a brilliant, astute and courteous doctor. Patients were always impressed by his medical knowledge, aligned with a unique ability to diagnose, treat and care. Friends remember ‘the Doc’ as a ‘larger than life’ character with a great intellect matched with a wonderful sense of humour. Overall they reminisce on a superb medical practitioner and a truly successful politician, who gave a life-long commitment to medicine and to politics and who was always trying to do his very best for the people he served, making him ‘a man of the people.’

We send our sincere sympathies to Sean’s loving family including his sons Dr Eoin, John and Aidan and his daughters, Caitriona and Maria, his daughters-in-law, Wendy and Severine and son-in-law, Dr Mick Molloy (current Chairperson, UCD MGA Committee) and his nine grandchildren, whom Sean adored.

May Sean rest peacefully.

With very best wishes,

Prof Michael P. Keane, MD, FRCPI, FRCP
