Dr Philip McEntee awarded prestigious 2025 Karl Storz AEAS Award

Congratulations to UCD School of Medicine’s Dr Philip McEntee, who was awarded the prestigious Karl Storz AEAS Award at the 33rd international congress of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES). This year, EAES was held in Belgrade from 17-20 June.

Researcher Dr Philip McEntee (UCD) presented his work “Clinical Deployment of Real-time AI Interpretation of Indocyanine Green Fluorescence Angiography in Colorectal Surgery – AUGUR-AI” (P. Mc Entee, C. Delaney, A. Singaravelu, P. Mac Aonghusa, R. Cahill – Ireland). Dr McEntee’s talk went on to be the winner of the prestigious Karl Storz EAES Award.

Explaining his presentation, Dr McEntee stated, ‘‘Colorectal cancer surgery involves removing the segment of bowel affected by cancer and joining the two remaining ends together (forming an anastomosis). Indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence angiography involves using a special near-infrared camera to visualise ICG that has been given intravenously. This helps the operating surgeon to assess the blood supply of the segments of bowel being joined back together and has been shown, in the hands of experienced surgeons, to reduce the chance of a leak at the anastomosis. Current practice involves the subjective interpretation of the ICG flow patterns but we have generated an AI algorithm that can interpret the ICG flow patterns to the level of an experienced surgeon and demonstrate this interpretation to the user.’’

Congratulations, again, to Dr McEntee on this fantastic achievement.
