The skin is the largest organ in the body and consumers often turn to the personal grooming sector for the solutions on how to care for their skin and scalp. There is an increased demand for knowledge in the areas of advanced skin care treatments and hair loss. This course will give hairdressers, barbers, therapists and beauty professionals more advanced knowledge, confidence and a deeper understanding of skin and hair science.

On completion of this Certificate, learners will be able to:

  • Understand broad concepts of skin & hair biological science.
  • Understand the normal presentation of our skin & scalp hair.
  • Understand common abnormalities affecting skin & scalp hair.
  • Understand the regenerative/wound healing capacity of skin & hair follicles.
  • Understand the psychosocial impact of skin and hair-associated issues.
  • Know how the hair fiber is formed and its structure etc.
  • Know the pathways for referral recommendations to medical professionals for skin & scalp hair conditions.
  • Know how skin cells are formed and the impact of age, gender & geographic ancestry.
  • Understand the impact of chemical exposure (incl. product interface with skin & hair).
  • Understand the impact of diet, wellbeing and environmental factors on the skin & hair.

Content organised into 5 sections and will run on Tuesday evenings 7-9 pm.

  • Week 1-3: Introduction to Skin and Hair Sciences
  • Week 3-5: Skin Anatomy and Physiology
  • Week 6-7: Skin Ageing and Management
  • Week 7-9: Hair Follicle Anatomy and Physiology
  • Week 10-11: Hair Follicle Ageing and Management

Webinars will be interactive, allowing students to actively engage with the lecturer and facilitating discussion by the participants with an expert in the field of skin and hair follicle science.

The Certificate course in total will consist of 30 hours of webinar-based interactive teaching and 250 hours of autonomous student learning.

All aspects of the course delivery that are credit-bearing are online, via webinars broadcasted via Adobe Connect on Tuesdays from 7-9 pm Irish Standard Time (typically). As this is an interactive course with a Q&A session at the end of each live-streamed lecture, we strongly suggest that students attend the live sessions. However, webinars will also be available for playback (during trimester period it was delivered in) unless otherwise specified.

Enrolled students will have to meet the minimum IT requirements for Zoom as well as ensuring they have prepared their laptop/PC before taking an online assessment. Students will also need an integrated webcam and microphone on the device they will be using to take the exam for e-proctoring purposes.

This course is aimed at professionals working in the personal grooming sector.

  • Applicants will have a Level 5 Certificate or equivalent and/or relevant work experience. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will also be considered for entry.
  • Mature students (over 23 years) may be exempt from the above prerequisites, only requiring RPL or experience in industry for entry.
  • Learners will require access to a computer/laptop with a camera and audio for partaking in live lectures, and the assessment and good Internet access/speeds.
  • Applicants must also meet UCD’s English Language Requirements.
