UCD Intern Team

The UCD Intern Training Network team comprises:

  • Professor Donal O Shea (UCD Intern Network Coordinator), Consultant Endocrinologist, St Vincent’s University Hospital
  • Ms Sinéad Cleary (UCD Intern Network Administrator)
  • Prof Alan Watson (UCD Intern Tutor), Consultant Nephrologist, St Vincent's University Hospital
  • Professor Denise Sadlier (UCD Intern Tutor), Consultant Nephrologist, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital
  • Dr Sean Fennessy (UCD Intern Lecturer),  St Vincent's University Hospital

    The team is supported by colleagues across a number of UCD School of Medicine Clinical Sites.

 

Intern Network Executive

The Intern Network Executive was established to promote the common strategies and goals of the six accredited Intern Training Networks and to enhance the efficiency and quality of intern education and training. The Intern Networks Executive (INE), in collaboration with their Universities facilitate: Cooperation and exchange of information between the Intern Training Networks in Ireland. The development of a common strategic policy and the promotion of common aims. A coordinated approach to interaction with those bodies having an interest and responsibility in the provision of medical education and training including the Medical Council, the Health Service Executive, the Forum of Postgraduate Training Bodies and the Department of Health & Children. A process for identifying and establishing a standardised approach to shared processes including: development of programme content, programme delivery, inspection and assessment. The execution of such processes remains the remit of the constituent Intern Training Networks and, as signatories of the Service Level Agreement (SLA), their respective Universities.

The Executive collaborates with and reports to the Medical Council on intern education programme content and intern assessment. This includes developing, with the Council’s support, qualitative and quantitative output and outcomes measurements that will provide reliable programme evaluation.

The committee comprises of the Intern Network Coordinators from each of the six national Intern Training Programmes:

  • Dublin Mid-Leinster (UCD) also known as UCD Intern Network
  • Dublin North East (RCSI)
  • Dublin South East (TCD)
  • Mid-West (UL)
  • South (UCC)
  • West/North West (NUIG)

HSE MEDICAL INTERN UNIT 

The HSE Medical Intern Unit was established in 2018 and since then has been reviewing different aspects of the intern year with input from multiple stakeholders including the Intern Network Executive and the Medical Schools. The Modernisation of the Intern Year project with the support of NDTP and the Medical Council aims to deliver an improved and comparable training experience for all interns.
