UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science Launches New Micro-Credential on the Impacts of Offshore Wind Energy Infrastructure on Birds

Sky

The University College Dublin (UCD) School of Biology and Environmental Science, has introduced a new micro-credential, Impacts of Offshore Wind Energy Infrastructure on Birds, designed to equip ecologists, environmental scientists, and professionals in the wind energy sector with the skills needed to assess and mitigate the ecological impacts of offshore wind infrastructure on bird populations.

This new micro-credential addresses the growing need to balance renewable energy development with biodiversity conservation. As offshore wind projects expand globally, understanding their effects on marine and coastal birds, species displacement, collision risks, and population-level impacts, is essential for sustainable energy implementation.

Bridging Ecology and Renewable Energy

The course aims to bridge scientific research and practical applications, fostering a better understanding of how offshore wind developments interact with wildlife. Funded by (opens in a new window)Skillnet Offshore Wind Academy, eligible participants can access a subsidised fee of €600, while the full course fee is €1,850. This initiative supports professionals in developing critical skills through short, flexible, industry-focused micro-credentials.

Impacts of Offshore Wind Energy Micro-Credential Syllabus

This micro-credential offers an in-depth curriculum covering essential topics for understanding and managing the effects of wind energy infrastructure on birds. Participants will explore ecological principles, environmental assessments, and practical monitoring methods.

Upon completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the direct and indirect effects of offshore wind energy on bird populations

  • Identify and monitor at-risk species in marine and coastal environments

  • Analyse and critique scientific studies, environmental assessments, and case studies

  • Apply ecological and statistical tools to assess risk and impact

  • Develop evidence-based recommendations to minimise avian impacts

Flexible, Hybrid Learning

The course is delivered over 5 weeks, combining online lectures (live or pre-recorded), practical exercises, and two half day field trips to Dublin Bay Biosphere. Students will gain hands-on experience in bird identification, monitoring, and data analysis while applying skills to real-world scenarios.

On successful completion of this micro-credential, participants will receive credits as per the European Credit and Transfer System (ECTS). These credits are recognised by UCD as aligned to learning completed at postgraduate level.

Applications are now open. Apply Now and learn more about this new micro-credential here.
