Our School Community

Welcome to the UCD School of Computer Science.

With over one thousand students on our Dublin campus, the UCD School of Computer Science is the largest computer science department in Ireland. We offer a 4-year BSc Honours degree in Computer Science, Masters degrees for both computer science graduates and conversion students, and 4-year Structured PhD programmes. Our courses cover the principles and practise of computer science encompassing programming, algorithm development, and data science. All of our teaching is informed by state-of-the-art research conducted within the School. In short, our programmes are Software-Focused and Research-Led

The School has topped the rankings for computer science research in Ireland for many years. The School has over 130 postgraduate students working on the latest topics in computer science. We host the Insight Centre for Data Analytics, the UCD Centre for Cybersecurity & Cybercrime Investigation, and the SFI Centre for Research Training in Machine Learning, amongst others.

UCD is ranked #1 in Ireland for graduate employability and graduates from the School are in high-demand from industry. These industry opportunities are supported by popular internships programmes embedded within our B.Sc. and M.Sc. curricula.

We are a vibrant community of educators, researchers, students, staff, collaborators and friends. Join us.

Research Driven

Research is a core activity in the School and staff contribute to many large funded research projects and centres. Scientists from the School won €34 million in grants from a range of national and international funding bodies and industry. School staff organise and help run conferences and regularly win “best paper” awards at top conferences. We have a wide range of research interests, with particular strengths in data science and machine learning, networks and distributed systems, and software and software engineering. We have researchers in the fields of knowledge discovery, language and cognition and cybersecurity and digital forensics.

Research Centres

UCD is cohost for the Insight Centre for Data Analytics, Irelands largest SFI Research Centre which undertakes high impact research on transforming data into knowledge to enable better decision making for individuals, society and industry. Insight researchers work with businesses to come up with solutions to their problems and conducts blue sky research in exciting fields such as the semantic web and linked data, areas that have the potential to transform society. The School has been actively part of insight since its foundation in 2013 and many of its 400+ researchers are part of the school.

Industry Engagement

The School is home to CeaDAR - Ireland’s National Centre for Applied Data Analytics & AI. CeaDAR acts as a bridge between the worlds of applied research in data analytics and AI and their commercial deployment. CeaDAR have over 100 industry partners, including both multinationals and SMEs.

All of our undergraduate students have the opportunity to engage in a five-month internship during their 3rd year. Students in our Negotiated Learning MSc can avail of the option to engage in a three-month internship, and frequently transition from this straight into full-time employment with their internship host company.

Our Teaching

Our research-led teaching principles inform and drive taught education programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. BSc students in 3rd and 4th years have the opportunity to specialise in different application areas such as Computer Graphics, Parallel Computing, Wireless Networking, Data Mining and Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering and Cybersecurity. Our innovative MSc in Computer Science (Negotiated Learning) programme offers many varied strands (e.g. data science, networks and IOT) that are informed by the Schools’s research expertise and allow students to tailor their education to their interests

Woman@CompSci

Women@CompSci is a group based out of the UCD School of Computer Science. Our goal is to create an environment which promotes the growth of women and other under-represented groups in Computer Science at all levels, by celebrating our diverse community.

Our message is Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

Athena Swan

University College Dublin was awarded the Athena SWAN Bronze Institutional Award on 15th March 2017. The Athena SWAN Award was established to promote the advancement of women’s careers in higher education and research. Receiving this Award is a welcome recognition of UCD’s commitment to our community to enhance gender equality in the university and is a significant milestone for UCD.
