Irish Language Courses

All courses commencing will be held live on Belfield campus. Please note that a minimum of 10 participants is required for each level.

We advise all learners to take our  (opens in a new window)online placement test  in order to ascertain which course level is the most appropriate.

You must use your UCD email address to apply for a course (except for level B1 TEG which is open to the general public).

Gaeltacht UCD provides (opens in a new window)Irish language courses for those who wish to learn or improve their Irish. All Gaeltacht UCD teaching materials are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) guidelines.‌ It is important to register early for the courses to ensure that you are allocated a place. Courses are only available to current UCD students and staff, except for B1 TEG ((opens in a new window)European Certificate in Irish) which is open to the general public as well.

Language Course Levels

LEVEL B1: Preparation course for level B1 (opens in a new window)European Cerificate in Irish Exam. The course will be fully covered over the two trimesters. Please note Part 1 and Part 2 must be registered for separately. Registration for Part 1 opens in June, and opens for Part 2 in January.

DURATION: 

  • Part 1, Trimester 1: 10 weeks
  • Part 2, Trimester 2: 8 weeks 

REGISTRATION FEE: We have limited spaces available to the public for this level, registration is €180 for Part 1 and €144 for Part 2 (non-refundable).

LEVEL A1: Suitable for those with no prior knowledge of the language e.g. people from other countries such as international students. Part 2 is for those who previously attended an A1 course. The course will be fully covered over the two trimesters. Please note you can only register for one part at a time.

DURATION: 

  • Trimester 1: 8 weeks
  • Trimester 2: 8 weeks

LEVEL A2: Suitable for those with some experience with Irish, e.g. from school. The course will be fully covered over the two trimesters. Please note Part 1 and Part 2 must be registered for separately. Registration for Part 2 will open in January.

DURATION:

  • Part 1, Trimester 1: 10 weeks (one class per week)
  • Part 2, Trimester 2: 8 weeks (one class per week)

LEVEL B1: Suitable for those who have experience with Irish and wish to progress. The course will be fully covered over the two trimesters. Please note Part 1 and Part 2 must be registered for separately. Registration for Part 1 opens in June, and opens for Part 2 in January.

DURATION: 

  • Part 1, Trimester 1: 10 weeks (one class per week)
  • Part 2, Trimester 2: 8 weeks (one class per week)

LEVEL B2: Suitable for those who are confident in their abilities and wish to progress further. Please note Part 1 and Part 2 must be registered for separately. Registration for Part 1 opens in June, and opens for Part 2 in January.

LENGTH: 

  • Part 1, Trimester 1: 10 weeks (one class per week)
  • Part 2, Trimester 2: 8 weeks (one class per week)
