GEM Stage 2 student Sarah Mackel attends COP30 as Luxembourg youth delegate

Monday, 24 November, 2025

Congratulations to Graduate Entry Medicine Stage 2 student, Sarah Mackel, who took part in the Conference of the Parties (COP30) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Sarah was one of the two youth delegates chosen as part of her home country, Luxembourg delegation.

Attending COP30 provides a unique opportunity for young people to engage in global climate discussions. Sarah was chosen due to her work on sustainable healthcare service delivery.

COP30 took place in Belém, Brazil, from 10 – 21 November 2025.

Speaking of the experience, Sarah said, "Health is a super important part of any climate discussion. Around the world, we see increasing morbidity and mortality due to heat waves, typhoons, or other climate change-related natural disasters and their aftereffects. I really hope that the involvement of more and more medical students and doctors in these kinds of conversations helps to increase discussions on the health aspects of climate change, and inform the agreements made at the UN."

Well done, Sarah!
