Participation in sport and activity is widely recommended to promote general health and wellbeing and to reduce the risk of establishing chronic diseases. Healthcare professionals play an important role in both encouraging participation in sports and in managing factors which may act as barriers to participation. Furthermore, these professionals are vital in the delivery of medical services to those who compete in these sports.
This 15 credit Professional Certificate in Primary Care (Sports Medicine) has been designed to meet the learning needs of those healthcare professionals who operate in a sporting environment. It is specifically designed to accommodate practitioners from a variety of specialities and focuses on the role of the MDT in the management of sports participants. Participants will learn to manage athletes primarily in a non-emergency environment and they will develop their competencies in assessing and managing common injuries and illnesses in the sporting population.
This course will complement the learning provided by the Professional Certificate in Emergencies in Sports and Exercise Medicine (X938).
This program is aimed at healthcare professionals (Doctors, Physiotherapists, Nurses, Athletic and Allied therapists) who provide or who intend to provide care to sports participants from the amateur to elite level.
Applicants should have completed a relevant health sciences or sports science degree. This list includes but is not limited to: Medicine, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Athletic therapy and training, Sport Science.
Prospective students will include those who are interested in progressing to a Masters level qualification within the current postgraduate framework with UCD.

Content will consist of presentations and pre-recorded materials which be delivered online via UCD's Brightspace platform. Material will be made available on a weekly basis.
Live webinars will take place on alternate weeks with content delivered by professionals who work with sports participants from the community to elite level.
Two practical and in-person workshops will run during the Trimester to allow students meet and interact with the academic staff and to develop the practical skills needed to operate in the sporting environment.
