Education, Research & Training

The School has long recognised the pivotal role of General Practice in the provision of healthcare and in health promotion.

UCD General Practice is led by two Full Professors both of whom are practising General Practitioners, supported by a faculty of Lecturers in General Practice and an adjunct faculty that makes up Ireland’s largest network of Primary Care physicians.

Primary Care education and training takes place throughout our undergraduate medicine programmes and in GP-specific rotations.  Our students develop essential knowledge and skills in history taking, clinical skills, differential diagnosis, biopsychosocial model of health and illness and professional aspects of clinical practice.  Recognising the continuum of healthcare delivery, our General Practice teaching is also integrated with hospital and community medicine in our highly regarded ‘Medicine in the Community’ module.  This module places a specific emphasis on prevention and health promotion, care of patients with acute problems, care of patients with chronic illness, psychosocial issues, continuing care and rehabilitation, family care, healthcare in the community and the care of specific patient groups including the elderly, children and patients with terminal illness.

Our academic staff are also active and engaged researchers leading several programmes of research across a wide range of thematic areas (including mental health, musculoskeletal medicine, substance use disorders, integrated healthcare and pre-hospital emergency care).  Although we have long had masters and doctoral research degrees in primary care, the School has begun developing specific graduate taught programmes to support the continuous professional development of general medical practitioners based on our research into the needs of this community of doctors.
