2024/25 Programme Requirements for Medicine Programmes

Applies to students in all Medicine programmes (Undergraduate, Graduate Entry or RUMC)

The following compulsory programme requirements apply to each year of study, in addition to meeting academic criteria for admission or progression.

These are as follows:

  • Health Screening and Vaccination
  • Garda Vetting
  • Commitment to Ethical & Professional Conduct including Confidentiality
  • Requirements for Participation in Clinical Education

Current students must confirm that they understand the programme requirements and undertake to complete these in a timely fashion, normally during the first year. Failure to complete these will result in you not being able to take part in mandatory elements of the programme and may delay your progression.


By entering the Medicine programme, you agree to comply with UCD School of Medicine’s Infectious Diseases Policy. It is your responsibility to ensure you complete your Health Screening process, as outlined in the policy, in a timely fashion. Please Note: the School of Medicine Infectious Diseases Policy is updated regularly and you should check the link above for the currently applicable version.

All Medicine students are required to pay a Healthcare Screening Cost of €310, payable at registration. The cost is charged to all students upon entering the Medicine programmes to cover costs associated with the health screening and vaccination against Hepatitis B. All Medicine students are required to complete Garda Vetting and police background checks in order to ensure that they pose no risk to patients, their colleagues or the School.

UCD does not consider you a fully registered student until you complete Garda Vetting. Students that have resided abroad must obtain relevant Police Certificates from every country in which they have resided for 6 months or more since the age of 18 and must furnish these documents to UCD Registry. Students should familiarise themselves with the Garda Vetting Requirement. Students should familiarise themselves with the Garda Vetting Requirement.

Students who acquire a charge/prosecution and/or conviction during their course of study are required to notify the UCD Authorised Signatory and will be subject to the provisions of the Garda Vetting Policy. Non-disclosure may result in a cancellation of registration.

All Students must be Garda Vetted by the timeline specified by the School.

During their education at University College Dublin, students will encounter real patients, their stories and personal information and data. Students must understand that NO information relating to patients can be disclosed in any format or via any medium including verbal, written or electronic/ online.

In addition, information pertaining to an individual’s health and health care is considered individually identifiable health information, subject to the laws of data protection, and sharing or disclosure of such information is an offence.

Students must agree to uphold their ethical and legal responsibilities in relation to the confidentiality of all patient information and data.

Medicine students must be familiar with the Guidelines for Medical Schools on Ethical Standards and Behaviour appropriate for Medical Students (and any updates) published by the Irish Medical Council and agree to uphold the Council’s standards of behaviour for medical students.

To participate in clinical education, medical students must agree to adhere to the prevailing requirements articulated by the School and its clinical training partners. Failure to adhere to all prevailing requirements will prevent your engagement with core clinical teaching and may impact your progress through the programme.

Participation in clinical education requires the completion of all elements of the School’s Passport to Clinical Education (current version).
