Placement/Internship Guide

This (opens in a new window)video talks about going out on placement, and while it specifically mentions social work, we think the information in there is valuable for any student going on placement!

You might have to deal with challenges such as navigating different transport options to get to your placement/internship. The daily schedule might be different to what you’ve been used to, and this could impact on your energy levels, relationships, and even your finances.

It might be hard not to see friends as regularly as you would like, and different work and study environments can bring different expectations. You might feel like the ‘new kid on the block’ when everyone else seems so experienced and knowledgeable, but don’t forget that everyone feels like this when they start something new like this.

You'll build on lots of skills that you have already developed, such as time management skills, punctuality and attendance, respect for colleagues, interpersonal skills, and the ability to reflect on your development. It can take some time to transition from feeling like a student to a professional, so be kind to yourself and allow yourself time to settle into this new role.

It will be important to carve out some time to engage in self care. Remember to contact peers or fellow students who are sharing a similar experience as well as professional supports, such as your placement coordinator/internship manager/director or your Student Adviser.
