Create and Manage Quizzes

Create a Quiz

Quizzes in Brightspace can be created within modules by selecting ‘Assessment’ from the navigation bar on the module homepage and then the link to ‘Quizzes’, this provides you with the option to create a new quiz.

The following short video tutorial from Brightspace;  How to Create a New Quiz (2.32). Please ensure have cookies enabled on your browser to view the video. If you cannot see the video, please clear your cache, reload the page and accept cookies.

Practical Tip

Before you share a newly created quiz with students it is recommended that you use the quiz preview tool, this enables you to understand exactly how all the settings, questions and feedback options will display from a students perspective. In quiz preview mode you can start and complete that quiz as a student would experience it. To do this you should review the short video tutorial from Brightspace; How to Preview a Quiz as a Learner (1.07)

Manage a Quiz (access settings)

Brightspace has several features that enable instructors to manage quizzes by applying a range of settings, while editing the quiz these can be found both in the ‘restrictions’ and ‘property’ tabs.

Under the ‘restrictions’ tab the following may help you choose and apply the correct settings for your students to access a quiz in Brightspace.

Availability:

  • Hide from Users checkbox allows you to manage the visibility of a quiz to students. Check this box to make sure the Quiz is Hidden from students. When unchecked students can see it (if the release conditions allow it). This does not necessarily mean that they can start the quiz. The latter is determined by the restrictions below.
  • Due date if you set this and the student submits the quiz after this date/time the submission is marked late.
  • Start and End dates; start date is the date/time the students can start the quiz. The end date is the date/time deadline for starting the quiz i.e. it cannot be started after this date/time. A student will not be able to re-access their attempt after the end date so it is recommended to set the end date the same as the due date.

Release Conditions:

You can set any release conditions relating to a quiz i.e. any condition that a student needs to meet before the quiz is released to them. A password for accessing the quiz can be set this could be useful if you want to control access to the quiz and ensure students start it when entitled to.

Timing:

You can set recommended or enforced time limits and students can be given a ‘grace period’ when the time limit is complete. This can be useful for students who may have a slow internet connection and click submit at the last minute. You can also decide how the quiz will behave when the time limit is exceeded. This is an important consideration if you are intending to use quizzes for an exam where you might want to choose the option to prevent the student from making further changes.

Special Access:

The ‘Special Access’ tool enables you to allow individual students different settings to complete the quiz. This is invaluable in providing time-based accommodations to individual students e.g. to make the quiz available at a different time, for a longer period of time or for more attempts. See this short video tutorial from Brightspace on: Quizzes Grant Special Access to Users (2.11).

Practical Tip

When special access is granted make sure to select ‘Any condition must be met‘ under the Release conditions option. This makes sure that students with special access are able to access the quiz.

Manage a Quiz (question delivery settings)

Brightspace has several features that you can implement to manage the delivery of questions in an online exam environment to encourage academic integrity. These are located in the ‘property’ tab and include the ability to;

  • randomise questions so that students will not see questions in the same order, or even the same selection of questions. You can also give each student a random selection of questions using the question pool function (e.g. each student gets two questions out of a possible 10 etc.)
  • limit the number of questions per page, by doing this one can limit the number of questions that appear on each page so it is not as easy to copy an entire quiz. The option to do this is found in the quiz editor under the "Quiz Questions" section. In the "Questions per page" field, indicate how many questions should be assigned to each page, then click "Apply", a line will appear to identify each page.
  • prevent backtracking by using the option to prevent students from going back to pages of questions they have already seen. This limits the ability to send out requests for answers to a specific question and go back to answer it later. The option to do this is found in the quiz editor under the ‘Quiz Questions’ where there is a check box option to ‘Prevent moving backwards through pages’.

Practical Tip

It is recommended that these features should be considered and used with caution as the use of these settings may cause issues for some students regarding accessibility.
