Iris Murdoch Centenary Event at Studio 6, Temple Bar Gallery, Dublin

The UCD Centre for Ethics in Public Life is organizing an event to be held from Friday 27 September to Sunday 29 September 2019.

The event is an exhibition at Studio 6 at the Temple Bar Gallery, which forms part of the centenary celebrations to commemorate the birth of Iris Murdoch in Dublin in 1919. The initiative is teamed with An Post, who released a stamp of Murdoch in July 2019, and Dublin City Council who have unveiled a plaque at Murdoch’s place of birth in Blessington Street, Dublin.

CEPL has partnered with the Philosophy-by-Postcard project created by the Women In Parentheses Group. The project invites the public to write philosophical questions to Iris Murdoch and send them to her birth address in Dublin. One hundred questions will be selected and professional philosophers will respond to these questions on specially commissioned postcards created by artists.

Ten artists have been commissioned to create artworks inspired by Murdoch’s philosophy and literature for the postcards, and these will be displayed at Temple Bar Gallery at the September exhibition. There will also be archival material on display, especially of Murdoch’s letters, and other items.

The public are invited to drop-in to Studio 6 at Temple Bar Gallery between Friday 27 September and Sunday 29 September to write a postcard to Irish Murdoch and post it in a specially designated postbox at the gallery, and to view the artwork and Murdoch materials.

Studio 6 is upstairs of the Temple Bar Gallery, which is located at 5-9 Temple Bar, Dublin, Ireland. During the Murdoch event the gallery will be open between 11am and 6pm each day.

We look forward to seeing you there!

The event is sponsored by a College of Social Sciences and Law Interdisciplinary grant, a UCD Centenary SEED funding grant and CEPL. We warmly thank all our sponsors.
