CEPL07 - Introduction to Ethics Theory and Practice

As professionals we make choices and decisions every day in our working lives and it can sometimes be difficult to look at problems and challenges in new ways. In particular we are often ill equipped to think about ethical issues as they arise in a work context. The purpose of this seminar is to provide attendees with new tools and practical ways for thinking about real world problems, tools which can be used in many different contexts including in their professional lives. The study of ethics is what provides us with these tools. This seminar will introduce attendees to some of the major normative ethical theories including Kantian ethics and consequential ethics such as Utilitarianism. These ethical approaches will be discussed in a real world context with particular focus on the kinds of ethical dilemmas and challenges which can arise in the actuarial context. Relevant case studies will be introduced to help us consider some of the issues. It is hoped that attendees will leave the seminar with a deeper understanding of the complexity of these issues and with some useful tools for considering and seeking solutions.
