CEPL08 - Ethics and GDPR

The introduction of the GDPR legislation in 2018 saw the most comprehensive update to EU privacy legislation in more than 20 years. And while GDPR has become a byword for data protection it is important to be aware of the many ethical considerations that underpin this legislation. The purpose of this seminar is to look at the broader concept of privacy and what it is that the GDPR legislation is trying to protect. During the seminar we will look at many of the challenges which advances in technology and big data initiatives have raised for individual’s privacy along with questions about freedom, confidentiality, identity, autonomy and threats to democracy. This seminar explores some of the emerging ethical issues for both individuals and society.  In particular it will look at some of the privacy issues which are now emerging in the insurance space because of advances in the self-monitoring that individuals are engaging in with wearable tech such as fitness apps, watches and other health and lifestyle monitoring tools.
