Coffee Morning: More Sustainable and Resilient Urban Traffic using Connected and Autonomous Vehicles

More Sustainable and Resilient Urban Traffic using Connected and Autonomous Vehicles

This Thursday we're joined by Shen Wang from the School of Computer Science to talk about his research on urban traffic and Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs), which utilise technologies that allow vehicles to talk to each other and to the infrastructure around them. CAVs are likely to be widely seen on the road in the next few years but how much benefit can this development bring to the existing road traffic? Shen's recent simulation-based work demonstrates that the introduction of CAVs can make urban traffic more sustainable, in terms of reducing CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, and also more resilient in the event of unexpected traffic congestion.
