IEHG & UCD Welcome Announcement on National Trauma System

On 27th April, the (opens in a new window) Ireland East Hospital Group (IEHG) and  UCD welcomed the Government's announcement on a national trauma system for Ireland.

The  (opens in a new window)Mater Misericordiae University Hospital was awarded Major Trauma Centre status, with  (opens in a new window)St Vincent's University Hospital appointed a designated Trauma Unit. Congratulations to the teams in both the Mater and St Vincent's who worked so hard to make this happen.

International evidence shows that countries which introduce inclusive trauma networks can reduce mortality by almost one-fifth (19%).  A Major Trauma Centre is a specialist hospital with all relevant expertise on a single site, responsible for the care of these severely injured patients.  Two such centres of excellence in trauma care are planned for Ireland, one in Cork and now the second in Dublin at the Mater.  They will be supported by specialist Trauma Units at strategic hospital locations around the country to make up the inclusive trauma network.
UCD and IEHG worked on this application to the  (opens in a new window)Department of Health over many months - joining together academics, clinicians and numerous other health specialties to ensure the most robust case was outlined for a Major Trauma Centre at the Mater campus and designated Trauma Unit at SVUH campus. This is a crucial step in the development of a national trauma system for Ireland. The Major Trauma Centre will provide all major specialist services relevant to the care of major trauma, leading to better outcomes for severely injured patients.
