On the 2nd day of the Future Health Summit in the RDS on 19 May last, Prof. Tim Lynch, Chief Academic Officer, IEHG, and Vice Principal for Health Affairs, UCD, delivered a 20-minute presentation on the Academic Health Science System in Ireland. His talk was very well received by the audience. The title of his presentation was 'Health Summit Innovation Session: Academic Health Science System in Ireland'.

U21 Health Sciences Group IPE International Student Challenge

This year UCD is fortunate to be one of the universities participating in the U21 Health Sciences Group IPE International Student Challenge. This year’s event is themed around the following task: How can we improve health equity and prevent the next pandemic? IEHG/UCD Virtual Grand Rounds | Hepatitis C Treatment - a Global Success Story, 29 April 2022

Please join us virtually this coming Friday, 29th May at 8am for what promises to be another fascinating IEHG Virtual grand rounds from St. Luke’s Hospital Kilkenny and the Liver Transplant unit in St. Vincent’s University Hospital. The presentation will focus on the medical antiviral treatment of Hepatitis C and the surgical treatment for Hepatitis C induced hepatoma and chronic liver failure and will involve case and topic presentation followed by panel discussion with.

2022 Seed Funding for PPI | UCD PPI Network

PPI Ignite Network @ UCD have launched their 2022 round of PPI seed funding, with the theme Equality of opportunity for public and patient involvement in research. The goal of this seed funding is to support PPI contributors to collaborate with UCD researchers on a project related to the development, design or implementation of processes that create more inclusive practices for PPI in research. The closing date for applications is 30th May 5pm. Applications must be collaborative, and can be led by either a PPI contributor or a researcher. Applicants can apply for up to €4,000.

All Ireland Interprofessional Healthcare Challenge

UCD took part in the All-Ireland Interprofessional Healthcare Challenge (AIPEC) held on Wed 23 Mar 22. In 2022 UCD joined the competition for the 1st time and faced teams from UCC, UL, NUI Galway, TCD, QUB, and RCSI. Students from UCD SoM and UCD SNMHS responded to a call from UCD Health Affairs, led by Professor Tim Lynch, and a team of six students were selected. The UCD team connected with Healthcare Professionals from IEHG hospitals and NRH to gather key information to support their person-centred interdisciplinary management plan. Assoc Prof Kate Frazer, UCD SNMHS was the UCD AIPEC Coordinator.

UCD Health Affairs and Ireland East Hospital Group (IEHG) NDTP are launching their eighth Virtual Grand Rounds from St. Coumcille’s Hospital on Friday, 25th March 2022 at 8am. This fascinating IEHG Virtual Grand Rounds from St. Coumcille’s Hospital starts with a case presentation on Phaemchromocytoma, followed by a presentation from the Emergency Department in the Home (EDITH) service which is a frailty response service, providing emergency medical and occupational therapy input to adults aged 65 and over providing an alternative to Emergency Department presentation.

The UCD Health Affairs and the CAO Group launch their CAO Annual Report 2021.

New treatment to help people with Parkinson’s commences in Ireland

A treatment that helps Parkinson’s sufferers by stimulating the brain has been used in Ireland for the first time. The treatment is part of the new National Deep Brain Stimulation Service based at the Mater Hospital in partnership with Beaumont Hospital, where all related surgery will be performed. This new service will treat patients with movement disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease, essential tremor and dystonia. Prof Tim Lynch, consultant neurologist and clinical director of the Dublin Neurological Institute has campaigned for over 20 years to bring this well-established treatment to Ireland.

Dublin Hospitals Cup - 2nd Oldest Rugby Cup in the world

This year’s Dublin Hospital’s Rugby Cup culminated in a thrilling encounter between the Mater Hospital and the Veterinary Hospital. A hugely physical Vets side were narrowly defeated by the Mater 15-12 on Friday night, 4th March 2022.

Parkinson’s patient imprisoned by his own body until a treatment new to Ireland set him free

Daniel McGinty was the first person to have Deep Brain Stimulation here in Ireland to treat Parkinson's disease, which he was diagnosed with in his mid-30s. Clinical director of the Dublin Neurological Institute, Professor Tim Lynch, has spent 20 years campaigning to make the treatment available in Ireland. Last year, Daniel became the first patient to undergo it here.

In February 2022, Liam Woods, HSE National Director of Acute Operations issued a sub-delegation to IEHG CEO Declan Lyons in relation to the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH), Dun Laoghaire. This means the NRH now falls under the full responsibility and accountability of the Ireland East Hospital Group (IEHG).

National Neuroinflammatory Forum 2022 | 4th March 2022

UCD Clinical Research Centre (CRC) has launched a new video titled - #HelloUCDClinicalTrials – Revolutionising Children’s and Adolescents Cancer Treatment and Outcomes. UCD School of Medicine receives €2.5 million funding from HRB (Health Research Board), in partnership with the CHI (Children’s Health Ireland) Cancer Trials Group, to enhance children and adolescent cancer patient-focused research. The programme aims to increase opportunities for child and adolescent cancer patients to participate in clinical trials and increase the critical support available to investigators from facilities to sponsorship.

Professor Tim Lynch, Vice Principal for UCD Health Affairs and Chief Academic Officer of Ireland East Hospital Group attended an event hosted by the President of Ireland and Sabina Higgins on 16th January at Áras an Uachtaráin for descendants of the Irish men and women who represented Dáil Éireann at the Treaty negotiations in London in 1921.

IEHG End-of-Year Review 2021

The IEHG End-of-Year Review 2021 was published on 22 December 2021. The Review demonstrates the incredible work that has taken place at a Group-level, in collaboration with UCD Health Affairs, and within IEHG’s 11 hospitals over what was another extremely challenging 12 months for our health service and staff.

UCD Health Affairs Academic Health Science System (AHSS) Grant 2021-2022

The UCD Health Affairs AHSS Grant will open for applications on 10th January 2022. This Grant aims to enhance the collaboration between IEHG, its affiliated community healthcare organisations, and UCD CHAS. This grant supports health and science-related research or educational/innovation projects that clearly will enhance the concept of an AHSS and that will align with key College/School education and/or research strategic objectives. It aims to raise awareness of UCD Health Affairs and to foster synergies between UCD CHAS, UCD Health Affairs, IEHG and its affiliated community areas. This is the first call for this grant.


IEHG Vaccinator Opportunity for Healthcare Students

The Ireland East Hospital Group is currently recruit vaccinators within various vaccination centres in Ireland East. The post holder will work as part of a dynamic team in delivering a safe and effective service for the mass delivery of vaccinations (COVID-19 vaccine).

Congratulations to Mr Tony Brady who graduated at UCD on 12th December. Tony expressed his gratitude to Professor Tim Lynch in the acknowledgment section in his thesis. Saying this would not have been possible without the expertise of Professor Tim Lynch, Consultant Neurologist at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and Vice Principal for UCD Health Affairs, who treated Tony in the ICU in 2015.

Learning from ‘natural gene therapy’ study published in Nature Medicine

Children with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) do not produce sufficient blood cells in their bone marrow and are at high risk to develop leukaemia. 25 years ago, European researchers founded the EWOG-MDS to improve diagnostic procedures and therapy for these rare disorders. Prof Owen Smith, Professor of Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine at UCD has been the National Coordinator for Ireland with EWOG-MDS since its inception.
