This paper draws on the experience of translating from Portuguese into English the Dictionary of the Brazilian Favelas - Wikifavelas Marielle Franco. We will briefly present the wiki platform and delve into the ways in which translational practice fosters critical education at the undergraduate level in a Brazilian state-funded university. Historical Critical Pedagogy (Saviani) as well as scholarly work in the field of Translation and Interpreting Studies constitute the theoretical basis for the ongoing research.
Junia Zaidan (PhD) is a linguist and a translator and teaches Applied Linguistics and Translation at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and at the MA and PhD Program in Linguistics at the Federal University of Espírito Santo, in Brazil. Her most recent book is entitled “Difusão, geopolítica e ensino do inglês na periferia do sistema” (Edufes, 2025).
