Contemporary Sociological Theory Today: A Round-table Discussion with Professor Avtar Brah on the Work of Stuart Hall and the Continuing Relevance of the Concept of Diaspora

UCD Sociology's Siniša Malešević and Steven Loyal host Professor Avtar Brah for this round-table discussion about her own work and that of Stuart Hall.

Avtar Brah was formerly a Professor of Sociology at Birkbeck. Much of her work addresses questions of culture, identity, race, and politics drawing on feminism and post-structuralism. 

Her books include Cartographies of Diaspora: Contesting IdentitiesHybridity and Its Discontents: Politics, Science, Culture (edited with Annie Coombes); Thinking Identities: Racism, Ethnicity and Culture and Global Futures: Migration, Environment and Globalization (both edited with Mary Hickman and Mairtin Mac an Ghail).

She was awarded an MBE in 2001 in recognition of her research.

UCD Sociology's Siniša Malešević and Steven Loyal host Professor Michael Mann for this roundtable discussion. Michael Mann is a Professor Emeritus of sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is a world leading comparative historical sociologist. His most influential books include the 4 volume ‘The Sources of Social Power’ (1986, 1993, 2012, 2013), ‘The Dark Side of Democracy’ (2005), ‘The Fascists’ (2004), ‘Incoherent Empire’ (2003), and ‘Does Capitalism Have a Future?’ (2013). Prof Mann is recipient of many awards including the UCD honorary doctorate and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation prize.

In this installment UCD Sociology's Prof Siniša Malešević and Associate Professor Steven Loyal will speak with Prof Arlie Russell Hochschild, Professor Emerita of sociology at the University of California, Berkeley. Hochschild is a world leading sociologist of emotions. Her most influential books include The Managed Heart, The Second Shift, The Outsourced Self, The Time Bind and Strangers in Their Own Land. Among many other awards Prof. Hochschild is the recipient of The UCD Ulysses Medal.
