Sociology Research
Welcome to the School of Sociology Research webpage. The School strives towards excellence in theory-oriented and empirically-based research. The staff members are active in a variety of different types of research programs, which range from large scale, interdisciplinary and cross national comparative projects to pieces of in-depth research, conducted by individual members of staff. We are convinced that academic pluralism is actually a strength, and we are proud that that our approach to academic pluralism is also reflected in our academic publications and in the School’s many research activities. To get an idea about our activities, please look at our news page, read through our research interests and our working papers.
The School is committed to the highest standards of research dissemination. Over the years, the School’s research output has flourished and the School’s own Annual Research Report documents research publications including academic books, articles in international, peer reviewed journals, regular and invited attendance at specialised symposia and international academic conferences, major consultant reports and various applied research activities, as well as other contributions such as newspaper articles and other types of media presentations. The School holds a regular seminar series with invited and internal speakers, and an Annual Research Day, which traditionally includes a presentation by an outstanding scholar or researcher.
The School of Sociology is successful in attracting major research funding for research projects and a number of staff are involved in providing research leadership and/or are the key partners in these projects. The School of Sociology has strong research links with a number of academic schools in cognate disciplines, as well as the Geary Institute, the Social Science Research Centre, the Institute of Criminology, the Institute of British Irish Studies, the Dublin European Institute, the Egalitarian World Initiative, the Clinton Centre, the Humanities Institute and a range of other research centres and institutes within UCD and external to the university. The School is also the founding member of the Migration and Citizenship Research Initiative, a multidisciplinary, cross-university and cross-sector research infrastructure and network that supports critically engaged research at national and international levels.
Together with the Social Science Research Center we are proud to host this year’s Interim Conference of the ISA’s Research Committee ‘History of Sociology’ at the end of June here at UCD. For more details visit the conference website.
