Research Project

BioAssess – An Environmental, Economic and Social Assessment Framework for Bioenergy and Bioeconomy Development in Ireland

Overview

BioAssess is a pioneering research initiative that aims to develop and test a new framework to analyse the sustainability of biomass resource use in Ireland’s growing bioeconomy.

The project is developing a comprehensive sustainability assessment framework to guide how biomass resources used for energy can be harnessed in the most sustainable way.

A key aspect of the project is its holistic approach to sustainability, combining:

  • Environmental Impacts,
  • Economic Impacts, and
  • Social Impacts

BioAssess is highly collaborative, working closely with stakeholders through the Industry Advisory Panel, including members from energy and farming industries, local authorities and policymakers to identify important resources, potential valorisation technologies, and inform on the uptake of the BioAssess Framework.

Ultimately, BioAssess will support the development of sustainable value chains for the Irish bioeconomy by providing evidence-based guidance for policy, planning, and industry innovation as well as integration of real-world stakeholder engagement with advanced sustainability analysis tools.
