DCU School of History and Geography hosted a special event organised by the Geographical Society of Ireland (opens in a new window)http://www.geographicalsocietyireland.ie/ in the college library earlier this month to honour five former editors of its journal Irish Geography.

The most recent editors of Irish Geography (2009-2015) were Dr Ruth McManus, Head of the Geography Department (SPD) and Dr Pádraig Carmody (TCD), formerly of the Geography Department at SPD. The other editors honoured were Emeritus Professor William Smyth (UCC), Professor John Sweeney (Maynooth University) and Dr Joe Brady (UCD). The President of the Geographical Society of Ireland, Dr Gerald Mills presented each of the former editors with a specially commissioned piece of artwork.

The event was also used to mark the publication of the first fully-online issue of Irish Geography (Volume 48,1). Among the papers in the special issue entitled Re-thinking the post-crash city is a by Dr Eoin O’Mahony of the Geography Department (SPD). Given the academic and policy relevance of the theme, the Geographical Society of Ireland has decided to make this issue fully Open Access for a limited period of time at the following link: (opens in a new window)http://irishgeography.ie/index.php/irishgeography/issue/view/110.

In May of this year the School of History and Geography will again join forces with the Geographical Society of Ireland in hosting the 48th Conference of Irish Geographers. (opens in a new window)http://www.conferenceofirishgeographers.ie/
