Emeritus Professor Anne Buttimer

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Anne Buttimer, Emeritus Professor of Geography.  Anne had a very distinguished international career as an academic in Geography and made major contributions to the development of the field. She was a noted scholar in the history and philosophy of geographical thought and practice and a leader in developments in human and cultural geography. She became Professor of Geography at UCD in 1991 and 'retired' in 2003 but Anne never stopped working on her projects. She was Ireland's preeminent geographer and accumulated a great many honours over her career, including becoming the first Irish President of the International Geographical Union (2000-2004). She had a lasting influence on Geography at UCD through her international contacts, generous spirit and abiding interest in the creation of academic communities. She will be greatly missed.
The arrangements for Anne's funeral are as follows:
  • Reposing on Tuesday 18th at Fanagans Funeral Home, Dundrum, prior to removal to the Church of Our Lady, Seat of Wisdom at Belfield, UCD, arriving for 3.30 pm Requiem Mass.

  • Removal on Wednesday 19th to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Watergrasshill, Co. Cork, arriving at 5.30 pm.

  • Requiem Mass on Thursday 20th at 2.30 pm followed by burial at Ardnageehy Cemetery.
