Welcome to the 2023 All-Ireland Interprofessional Healthcare Challenge for Students
UCD Health Affairs seeking students who wish to get involved and participate in the All-Ireland Interprofessional Healthcare Challenge. An interdisciplinary team is required, and we are seeking up to 8 students to represent UCD. See eligibility details below. The best health outcomes for the many and increasing numbers of people with complex or chronic healthcare needs often depend on effective teamwork and collaboration between various healthcare professionals with different skills and knowledge. The AIPEC aims to develop this important capability prior to graduation, in a way that is transformative, authentic, and fun!
The AIPEC is an extracurricular competition for University students across all health disciplines. It provides participants with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate their expertise in teamwork and collaboration as they develop a management plan for a client with complex health needs. The UCD student team will be supported by two members of academic staff for the AIPEC Challenge.
We are delighted to announce that the competition will return to an in-person event which will be hosted by the University of Galway on Friday, March 24, 2023.
History of the All-Ireland Interprofessional Healthcare Challenge (AIPEC)
Pioneered by academics from the University of British Columbia over 25 years ago, the AIPEC was brought to Australia and developed by an interprofessional team of Queensland academics under the name of HealthFusion. The University of Limerick was the first university in Ireland to host a AIPEC with its pilot event in 2017. Under the leadership of students and staff at the University of Limerick the Irish AIPEC has gone from strength to strength progressing from a UL-only competition five years ago to a national event to include students from eight Universities in Ireland: University of Galway (UoG), University of Limerick (UL), Trinity College Dublin TCD), and University College Cork (UCC), University College Dublin (UCD), Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI) and Queens University Belfast (QUB) and Ulster University.

Conditions of Entry
All students that wish to participate in the AIPEC must be enrolled in a health science programme or degree in the same calendar year as the competition they wish to participate in. Students must be pre-registration. Students that have graduated previous to the current year and have entered into full time employment are not eligible to compete on behalf of that professional discipline.
Commitments Associated with Participation
By registering for the AIPEC, students commit to:
- Working within an interprofessional team to develop an eight-minute presentation of a management plan in response to the case study provided.
- Attending the AIPEC Event Day on Friday 24th March in person in Galway.
