Sigma Theta Tau Webinar John Gilmore

Dr John Gilmore, Assistant Professor at the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems, recently led an international webinar hosted by Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, titled “LGBTQ+ Health Insights from Ireland.” The session attracted 227 live participants from 17 countries, including Canada, Chile, Egypt, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Jordan, Lesotho, Mexico, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the US Virgin Islands

During the webinar, Dr Gilmore provided an overview of core concepts in LGBTQ+ health, drawing on international evidence and best practice. He also shared findings from his own research on LGBTQ+ health equity in Ireland, including work on inclusive nursing education and the development of a framework for embedding LGBTQ+ issues into healthcare curricula. His presentation highlighted the need for systemic change to reduce health disparities and improve care experiences for LGBTQ+ people.

The event was warmly received by participants, with webinar organiser Linda Anders commending the much-needed and timely content. Participants described it as “excellent,” “engaging,” and “critically important in today’s healthcare climate.” Many praised Dr Gilmore’s clear and knowledgeable delivery, with particular appreciation for his inclusive, research-informed approach and advocacy for LGBTQ+ health equity.

In his closing remarks, Dr Gilmore emphasised that “issues of LGBTQ+ health equity are issues of human rights,” calling on nursing professionals globally to champion inclusive, affirming, and evidence-based care.
