Professional Internship Placement

The UCD Lochlann Quinn School of Business Summer Internship Programme provides students with a unique opportunity to experience the world of professional work in an international environment. Students will have the opportunity to put theory and skills learned in the classroom into practice during their degree. The programme consists of a six-week unpaid internship with a partner employer and two weeks of intensive classroom work. You will develop valuable business skills, discover where your strengths and interests lie and gain relevant experience that will boost your employability.

Internship Component

Students will complete their 6 week internship, working from 24th June to 1st August 2024 (Monday-Thursday). Summer academic internships may be subject to in-person or hybrid working arrangements (with a minimum of 2 days onsite,) depending upon individual company arrangements.

The internships team can provide a broad spectrum of intellectually engaging internships. Placements take place with a wide variety of employers from Start-Ups, Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs), voluntary organisations to private companies and multinationals. Our internship partner list is reviewed regularly and is updated from year to year.

Your placement will be determined by the three areas of interest expressed in your online application together with your employment history, academic grades and the skills required for the role. Many of the roles available are project-based and may span across multiple areas. The following is a selection of some of the potential internship roles available, click on the links for further details. Please note these are sample roles and NOT specific roles on offer in any given year.

Sample Positions

This category includes the areas of Accounting, Audit and Finance.

Finance / Accountancy interns can expect to be working with senior members of an organisation on various projects specific to the finance and accountancy departments.

In previous years, Finance / Accountancy internships have been offered in organisations including: Bank of Ireland, Beacon Hospital, Deloitte, KPMG, Lafferty and Co., XLCatlin 

Sample roles and responsibilities Desirable competencies
  • Reviewing the economics of various departments of a business
  • Accounts preparation using Excel and Sage
  • Assisting end of month reporting
  • Assisting Audit & Advisory teams
  • Paper and electronic file management and archiving
  • Preparing VAT returns & reports
  • Financial Statement Analysis

  • A good working knowledge and understanding of auditing, income tax and corporation tax 
  • Capable of working on own initiative
  • Problem-solving approach to work

This category includes Business Development and International Business Research.

Business Development / International Business interns generally work with senior members of an organisation on projects and day-to-day tasks. Interns gain valuable experience assisting in identifying new opportunities for business growth and researching current trends and competitors.

Sample roles and responsibilities for interns:

  • Market research
  • Customer profiling
  • Generating marketing content
  • Preparing communication materials
  • Reporting and presenting data
  • Assisting in the identification of sales leads

Desirable competencies:

  • Research capabilities

  • Able to work as a team player
  • Analytical skills

This category includes Marketing, Sales and PR.

Interns working in Marketing departments generally report to the Heads of Marketing and Sales teams and work on a variety of projects within the department.

Sample roles and responsibilities:

  • Assisting the Marketing Manager
  • Organising and supporting events
  • Updating websites, social media and marketing materials
  • Reviewing and updating newsletters
  • Designing PR and communications plans
  • Identifying and researching competitors
  • Reporting and data analysis

Desirable competencies:

  • Knowledge of Social Media/ PR/ Communications
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Enthusiasm to learn and develop new skills within the role
  • Creative and idea-generating approach to work
  • Knowledge of graphic design, digital media or SEO

This category includes all aspects of Business Analytics.

Interns in Business Analytics can be tasked with a variety of projects and will have an opportunity to showcase and develop their skill sets in relation to analytics and research.

Sample roles and responsibilities for interns:

  • Client reporting and data analysis
  • Analyse customer data to identify key trends
  • Preparing reports based on analysis
    Maintain / improve existing data analysis tools & reports

Desirable competencies:

  • Excellent Excel knowledge
  • Data analysis capabilities
  • Understanding of database tables
  • Proactive approach to problem solving
  • Quick learner

This category includes all aspects of Human Resource Management.

Interns working in Human Resources Management departments will have exposure to various areas of their employer's business. Interns may be asked to work on a variety of projects which may include liaising with other departments. 

Sample roles and responsibilities:

  • Providing day to day support for HR and Project Managers
  • Supporting, overseeing and delivering a range of people processes including: recruitment, performance management, induction, graduate recruitment, employment relations and learning & development
  • Research, preparation and presentation of information as required
  • General departmental administration
  • Assisting performance management review projects 

Desirable competencies: 

  • Excellent IT skills
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and prioritizing skills
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Ability to work on own initiative and equally as part of a team
  • Good business acumen
  • Advanced proficiency of Microsoft office ie Word, Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint
