Introducing our EDI officer, Dr. Gary Brennan

2 Gary Brennan

I am an assistant professor in the UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science (SBBS), with specific involvement in the Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Genetics and Biochemistry degree programmes. I run an active research group in the UCD Conway Institute with a focus on understanding the molecular mechanisms of epilepsy development following brain injury and investigating novel therapeutic strategies. I am also the current Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) officer for the School and I use he/him pronouns. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community I feel very strongly about promoting and implementing inclusive policies in our School and in Science in general, to hopefully improve the 3rd level experience for underrepresented or marginalised individuals.

The goals of the EDI committee are to promote and maximise inclusiveness in SBBS. My priority is to ensure that all members of our School at all levels (undergraduates, MSC, PhD students, technical and administrative staff and faculty) all feel they are accepted and supported as members of our community. We strive to create an inclusive and safe space for all in which to study and work. We hope to change the perception that 3 rd level education is reserved for certain individuals and provide equal opportunities for all, regardless of gender/sex, age, racial/ethnic background, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status etc. Diversity drives progress and we are proud of the diverse individuals who make up our community here at SBBS. It is our mission to continue to support, celebrate and protect this diversity.

I look forward to taking over this position from Dr Derek Costello who has continued the excellent work of his predecessor Prof Siobhán McClean. Together they spearheaded the School’s successful Athena Swan bronze application which was awarded in 2019. Athena Swan has the primary focus of promoting career and gender equality within the University sector. This was a wonderful recognition of our School’s commitment to gender equality. As EDI officer I will now oversee our School’s next Athena Swan application and ensure the continued implementation of these gender inclusive practices.

The SBBS EDI committee run several social, societal and academic events throughout the year as well as support and develop programmes for staff and students in SBBS. We welcome any and all suggestions to support and improve inclusivity in the School so please do reach out with suggestions.  Please keep an eye on our SBBS, EDI and social media profiles for all the latest updates. I look forward to engaging with all members of the School throughout my time as EDI officer.
