Summer School at SBBS

UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science offers a Summer School annually with the University of Hawaii at Manoa sending students to the Biochemistry Summer School.

Find out more about our Summer School below

The UCD Biochemistry Summer School provides an opportunity for students from the University of Hawaii at Manoa to complete their biochemistry requirements while spending 6 weeks of the summer period in Ireland at UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science from mid-June to end July.

Classes are scheduled from Monday to Friday. At weekends students may choose to travel around Ireland and/or Europe. A 4-day long weekend is scheduled at the midpoint of the course which enables students to take a longer trip(subject to visa requirements). Dublin has regular flights to all major European cities.

Students accepted onto the Biochemistry Summer School will be provided with:

  • A confirmation of admission letter
  • Welcome and Orientation events on arrival including a social reception and tour of campus
  • A welcome Pack including a laboratory manual, a reusable water bottle, a laboratory notebook
  • A lab coat and lab safety glasses(on loan for the duration of the summer school
  • Support from the Programme Director and School Office

All aspects of the biochemistry curriculum taught in the US are delivered during the summer school, providing a total of 7.5 ECTS. Students attend lectures, tutorials, problem-solving workshops and laboratory classes with homework, laboratory reports, laboratory performance and weekly tests which, along with the final written exam, contributes to the overall result of the module.

Feedback on homework and weekly tests is routinely provided as soon as possible to aid further learning. At the end of the Summer School each student's grades are compiled and formally reviewed and overseen to ensure consistency of grading. Results are then issued to the student's home university and a transcript provided to each student.

Lab Classes: Students will be split into small groups for lab classes with a dedicated demonstrator/teaching assistant for each group. Senior demonstrators will be present to help coordinate lab class activities. Dedicated technical officers will prepare the lab facilities, equipment and chemicals for each class and will be available to deal with any equipment issues that arise. Faculty will deliver an introduction to the lab classes and visit labs to oversee activities. Before each lab class students are expected to prepare by familiarising themselves with the details of that experiment and any further directions provided. In lab classes students work in pairs or on their own conducting the experiment themselves using the glassware, chemicals and equipment provided with dedicated bench space.

Tutorials: Students will be split into small groups for tutorials with a dedicated tutor.

Faculty

The UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science (SBBS) is proud to offer this summer school focused on biochemistry, the foundation of understanding life at the molecular level. Our expert faculty lead research into health, disease and drug discovery, with biochemistry at the core, supported by strengths in microbiology, pharmacology, genetics and neuroscience.

Students will learn in a dynamic, collaborative environment that combines teaching excellence with real-world scientific insight. Our vibrant and welcoming community includes learners from Ireland and across the globe, and we are excited to share this learning experience with our summer school participants.

Our faculty (academic staff) are highly experienced in teaching biochemistry at undergraduate, graduate taught and graduate research levels. They are all engaged in research and have strong records of publishing in high impact international journals. You can read about our academic staff and those teaching on the Biochemistry Summer School (listed below) at https://www.ucd.ie/sbbs/about/academicstaff/

  • Assistant Professor Jana Haase (Programme Director)
  • Assistant Professor Jens Rauch (Deputy Director)
  • Assistant Professor Jennifer Mitchell
  • Assistant Professor Jonathan Bailey

Accomodation

During the Biochemistry Summer School students live on campus in UCD student accommodation, just a 10 minute walk away from the O'Brien Centre for Science where lectures, labs and classes take place. Each student will have their own single bedroom with an ensuite bathroom. Bedrooms are organised into apartments with shared kitchen and living spaces with various combinations of 4,6 and 8 bedrooms.

Meal Plan

Students are provided with a Meal Plan that includes breakfast and lunch (Monday to Friday) at Pi Restaurant, which is also located in the O'Brien Centre for Science.

Excursions

The School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science in conjunction with the UCD School of Chemistry, organises two weekend day-trips to places of historical and cultural interest in Ireland at no extra cost to the participant.
