Dr Sarah Raine joins School of Music as SFI-IRC Pathway Fellow

08 November 2023

The UCD School of Music is delighted to announce that (opens in a new window)Dr Sarah Raine has joined the School to undertake a four-year SFI-IRC Pathways Fellowship on “Improvising Across Boundaries: Voicing the experience of women and gender minority improvising musicians.” She is joined by PhD student, Judit Csobod, whose studentship is also funded by the fellowship.

Taking a queer feminist approach, Dr Raine’s project will explore the experiences of women and gender-minority improvising musicians on the island of Ireland. The fellowship is co-funded by (opens in a new window)Science Foundation Ireland and the (opens in a new window)Irish Research Council. It is hosted by the School of Music but will engage actively with industry through collaborative partners at the (opens in a new window)Improvised Music Company and the (opens in a new window)Creative Futures Academy. Its outputs will be innovative in form as well as content, including a co-produced book, a forty-minute documentary, public reports for a range of audiences, and resources and guidance.

Dr Raine said, “This fellowship success is the highlight of my research career to date. With it comes an invaluable opportunity to work with the music scene community on the island of Ireland to make a difference for current and future generations of musicians, in addition to the joy of working with wonderful colleagues from UCD School of Music, the Creative Futures Academy, and the Improvised Music Company. I am excited to begin this fellowship at UCD and hope to be an active contributor to Popular Music Studies in Ireland. I already feel very much at home, having been warmly welcomed to UCD and back to Dublin following a year back in the UK.”

Her project mentor, (opens in a new window)Associate Professor Jaime Jones said, “I am really thrilled to welcome Dr Raine to the School of Music. Her impressive track record is outdone only by her passion for research and her methodological and critical integrity. This project stands to make an enormous contribution to our understanding of creative practice by women and gender-minority improvisors; one of my favorite things about the project is the way that it engages directly with musicians and with industry in a truly collaborative spirit. We are so lucky to have Sarah join us and I know that she will have a lasting impact on music at UCD.”

Head of School Dr Tomás McAuley said, “We are incredibly excited to welcome Dr Raine to the School of Music. Dr Raine is a researcher of the highest international standard, and her work will not only advance understanding of the experiences of women and gender-minority musicians – important though that is – but will also have vital practical impacts on the development of musical improvisation in and beyond Ireland. We are also thrilled to welcome Judit Csobod as the PhD student funded by this project. In addition to her research, Dr Raine will, as a Pathway Fellow, contribute new and innovative teaching to the School and is already making an additional impact as co-convenor of our Seminar Series and as a member of the College of Arts and Humanities Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee.  We wish her and Judit every success.”
